Special Guest at Skytanking - SOFIA Visits Cologne

SOFIA (= Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy), the flying telescope that was developed by NASA in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center, is currently visiting Cologne. On Tuesday, Skytanking had the pleasure to service SOFIA for the first time.

The aircraft was refuelled in parallel under both wings using one 60 m³ and one 80 m³ fuelling truck. The required blockfuel was 123 m³ of Jet A-1. Therefore, with a remaining fuel amount of 20 m³ onboard, a total of 103 m³ had to be loaded onto the aircraft. This was achieved in less than 30 minutes.

Approximately twenty flights of 8 hours each are planned over the next 6 weeks, always with different flight patterns.
